Description: | Once the gold leaf was encased in a thin sheet of glass, a large gather of glass would be layered overtop of it. “And after we had it [i.e. the thin sheet of glass] on there, it was slightly heated. And then I had my glassblower gather the glass on the blowpipe as you see here. And then, I would cut this off, over that piece of thin glass, and by rolling it out with my rolling pin into a little pancake, the gold leaf itself is 3/8 of an inch square. Then these had to be annealed. Here I’m rolling it with my rolling pin to make it 3/8 of an inch thick...” (Gunther, Ariel. Transcript of Bryn Athyn glassmaking lecture.
