Title: | Samuel Croft II assembling a mosaic for Glencairn |
Source: | Raymond and Mildred Pitcairn Archives, Bryn Athyn, PA |
Date: | 1930s |
Medium: | |
Description: | Once a design had been completed, it was put onto a sheet of heavy paper and individual tesserae were glued to it. “Here you see [Samuel Croft II (1899-1981)] . . . . We gave them each a jar of this material [a special glue made of gelatin, glycerin and gum Arabic], and a little brush, and they would actually just put this paste on the paper and press the mosaic into it” (Gunther, Ariel. Transcript of Bryn Athyn glassmaking lecture. Raymond and Mildred Pitcairn Archives, Bryn Athyn, Pennsylvania). The star patterns Samuel is working on may be intended for the ceiling of Glencairn’s great hall. |
